Leave Out central heating system protection cover at your own risk

There are householders insurance cover to cover most eventualities these days, from pet health protection to consumer electronics cover. Of course, some things are more important to get covered than others and, with the likes of motor insurance, you may be legally required to do so. The bank will need the borrower to take out buildings insurance in a case when there is the need for a mortgage to buy a property. Insurance offers security against unpredicted events that can severely affect life and property.

Moving a step down the ladder of importance we find gas central heating insurance, such as the products offered by British Gas. The gas central heating policy is obviously not as important as your home insurance, but its important nonetheless as fixing it can cost you a fortune if you have an unexpected central heating system or heating breakdown. Another issue is that finding someone to fix it in an emergency can be a lengthy process and living without warm water or heating is unthinkable, especially in winter. More worryingly is the prospect of a faulty system leaking carbon monoxide, which can be fatal.

Several types of central heating insurance plans are available. Basic plans will cover annual servicing, safety checks and other minimum requirements. Spare parts and repair work are not included so you carry the risks of a breakdown. You just need to pay small amount per month to upgrade to a policy that covers repairs, labour and spare parts building on one of these basic plans, unless your gas boiler is under warranty and covered by the manufacturer or the installer. And you could find that if you have an especially old heating boiler that this money will go a long way. Although a customer may just want their heating boiler covered, it might be prudent to have the rest of the system (radiators, heating controls, central heating pump and so on) covered too.

One thing to watch out for when choosing a policy is any exemptions or limitations written into the policy document. The insurance provider may set a ceiling cost for all repairs and spare parts within a year, or fix a limitation on how many house calls they will entertain. As should be done for all other kinds of insurance, don’t simply select an insurance policy with the lowest cost without examining the level of coverage and ascertaining it fulfills your needs and that of your gas central heating system.
