The pumped or vented system is most often seen. You will notice that this configuration incorporates a feed and expansion tank in addition to a hot water cylinder. Hot water expands and in this type of system flows back to the expansion tank. The tank is positioned in the highest place in the house, normally the attic area.
As thinking develops sealed systems are now more normally being installed in homes. An advantage of a sealed system is that it has no requirement for an expansion tank. The function of the water feed tank is now provided by the cold water mains. This removes the requirement for any pipework or central heating water tanks in the loft, the sealed nature of the system without any venting delivers a number of benefits:
- no chance of freezing pipes in the loft
- your upkeep requirements are reduced as there are fewer elements
- reduces the risk of leaking
- reduced risk of airlocks, corrosion and sludge as there isn’t a chance of air being drawn down into the system through open vents as the system is sealed
It is familiar for the water supply pressure to alter and that this is dealt with by incorporating a pressure vessel. A safety valve will open if the pressure is higher than recommended. Similarly cold water is allowed into the system if the pressure is lower than the advocated level.
