Shrink that boiler bill
Shrink that boiler bill
Ever increasing gas costs make it important to get the most out of your gas boiler and gas central heating system. Whilst heating boiler systems have become more cost-efficient in recent years they will typically consume up to fifty percent of all your gas costs. To help you we have outlined below some prompt tips to cut your heating bills.
Only use gas heating systems when and where you need it :
Turn off the radiator in any rooms which are not used such as the guest room or utility room. There are no drawbacks in not heating rooms which are not used, but there is an advantage in reducing the energy costs to heat your home. If you keep the door closed to the room it will stop the flow of cold air around your home.
Use the gas heating system not the fire :
If the room needs to be warmer use thermostatically manipulated radiator valves and rise the temperature setting. A lot of the heat generated by a fire goes up in the chimney to the outside, a central heating is more cost-efficient than an electric fire.
Eliminate draughts with insulation
Stop being chilly air flowing into your home means that you do not have to pay for gas to continually heat the air. Use draft excluders or door brushes where they can be fitted. There can be gaps between the window and door frames and a wall which are easily sealed with a foam based sealant. These type of gaps happen often in older houses as the foundations settle. If you are careful and use a candle flame you can detect where drafts are in a room.
Ensure you are wearing warm clothes indoors :
If you are going to turn up the heating thermostat stop and consider whether it could be best to put on some additional clothing. You can save up to 10% on your heating costs just by trimming the thermostat by 1°.
Make better use on your curtains to control temperature :
During the daylight if the sun is shining keep the drapes on the sunny side of the house open to heat the interior of your home. At night most of your home’s heat is lost through it’s windowpanes. Drapes can be an additional form of insulation and this time and cut heat loss if they are shut, you can save a substantial amount of money over time with this method. Thick drapes are better at stopping heat loss than thin ones.
:
Check your gas heating system and whether it has a hot water cylinder as this should be insulated. The hot water tank can keep its heat throughout the daylight if insulated making water available for you whenever required.
Experts employ metal foil in the wall space at the rear of a metal radiator to cut heat escape to the outside.
