Taking a central heating system care service
Taking a central heating system care service
Restoring a heating boiler after an unpredicted failure can cost you a lot of money. If there is also a hold up waiting for a heating engineer to arrive you could be without hot water for a considerable period. To avoid these problems many individuals take out boiler and heating insurance.
Before you buy you should check the options of the central heating boiler care plan to ensure that they meet your needs. With all policies for a regular fee your provider will send round an engineer to try and fix your central heating system when it breaks down. The regular promise is to try to call within 24 hours, whilst the providers will strive to achieve this it is only a target, no supplier will guarantee this response time although the service can be improved if you pay an additional regular fee. Often priority is also given to elderly people or families with young children.
Your central heating system care plan can often be expanded to care other services in your home such as the plumbing, drains and home electrical wiring. Whilst you gain economies of scale the more characteristics you incorporate the higher the regular cost.
The right type of plan will depend on your circumstances. If your central heating boiler heats both your water and your house, you might want to incorporate central heating with your cover which will include protection for your radiators. If your wiring is old you might want to incorporate wiring care.
Often a boiler cover plan will include provision of a twelve month central heating system service. Irregardless of whether your boiler plan incorporates a 12 month service or not we recommend that you ensure one is carried out. There is no ambiguity here, you must have a twelve month gas boiler service.
The lifetime operating costs of your central heating system can be reduced through regular servicing and maintenance. Often boiler care suppliers will only offer insurance when they see that a regular gas boiler service is carried out.
There are some exceptions which you should look out for:
You may find the policy only contains one hours labour and a limited number of parts. Whilst you may save in the short term with this type of policy in the long run it can cost you.
Some gas boiler care plans do not cover older boilers. You should check for this type of restriction before purchasing the plan.
You need to continually critique your plan on renewal as is sometimes some limitations will now apply to you. If you have a large number of failures or your central heating boiler is older than a certain age you might find that your plan no longer covers these.
Whilst you could change the supplier for your central heating cover, it would be an advantage to have a policy that renews cover for the lifetime of your gas boiler. The failures are more common with an older central heating system and hence your need for a boiler care plan will increase at this time.
There is sometimes a care restriction of two gas fired boiler breakdowns per year. With an older central heating system should ensure that you have limitless call-outs.
You can reduce your monthly fee by selecting a plan that integrates a callout charge. If you do not have any breakdowns or have a younger gas fired boiler this could be a good option for you.
